‘ACV’ The Apple Cider Vinegar (aka ACV) Detox is widely used across the fitness industry who use it to detox and aid in fat loss on a regular basis. In its raw form, Apple Cider Vinegar is full of enzymes, vitamins and minerals.
The recommended type of Apple Cider Vinegar for detoxing and cleansing the body is the raw variety which is unfiltered and unprocessed. The raw variety contains what is called the “Mother”, a popular brand is Braggs, and you can get it from most supermarkets. The “Mother” is the sediment left after the fermentation process, which is effectively the meat of the apples.
The Apple Cider Vinegar Detox is claimed to lead to many health benefits. The benefits include weight loss, lower blood sugar levels, and improved symptoms of diabetes.
Apple cider vinegar only contains about 3 calories per tablespoon, which is very low. Quality apple cider vinegar contains potassium, amino acids and antioxidants. ACV is also an organic antibiotic, helping to backup your immune system.
Using the ACV detox is an excellent way to cleanse the body and kill bacteria. It also helps with weight loss due to cleaning of the intestines, which in turn aids in digestion and the natural working order of your stomach. Not only will it do this, it also kills off bacteria as it moves throughout your body.
To achieve sustainable weight loss through the Apple Cider Vinegar diet, you only need to drink a small amount of it diluted in water, and you can do this before each meal or just at morning and night. Your pH levels will improve and with the other benefits it will also help to clear your skin of impurities. To achieve the best benefits of the ACV detox, you only need to take apple cider vinegar in small quantities during the day. Most people take one or two tablespoons with a glass of water, and some like to add honey and lemon also.
Benefits of Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar (daily):
Drinking ACV on a daily basis will help your skin to be cleansed from the inside, and as a result can be used for acne breakouts. It can also be used to rinse your hair and give it a greater shine. It’s never advisable to drink ACV raw as it will likely lead to a sore throat due to the acidity from the fermentation process, instead it’s best mixed with water (e.g. 1 tablespoon of ACV with 200ml of water).
Raw Apple Cider Vinegar tastes much like regular vinegar that many people use to add on their chips/fries. Whilst in its raw form ACV is acidic, it becomes alkaline in the body once it’s been digested and the acetic acid has been decomposed.
Why do your pH levels matter?
There is a growing amount of research suggesting that having acidic pH levels is directly associated with greater risk of ailments such as Heart Disease, Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes. These same research outcomes suggest that alkaline pH levels are directly linked to lower risk of Heart Disease/Stroke, lower risk of Hypertension, and improvements in Memory and Cognition.
Benefits of an Apple Cider Vinegar Detox:
The Apple Cider Vinegar detox helps to increase the natural immunity of the body, but that’s not limited to a simple addition of ACV in to the diet, it is in line with including a variety of other beneficial items to your regular intake. For colds and flu, a hot cup of cider vinegar mixed with cayenne pepper, lemon and honey will help to open the sinuses and give your body a boost of vitamins/minerals needed to help fight the virus.
For help with weight loss, it’s important to understand that truly managed and long term successful weight loss comes from a calorie controlled diet. This comes from simple mathematics based on what calories you require to live a healthy life, vs how many calories you burn on a daily basis with/without exercise. Any good personal trainer will be able to help you with this, and it’s always worth understanding the metrics from a basic level to achieve your goals. In line with optimising a calorie controlled diet, research has shown that consumption of Apple Cider Vinegar may help to avoid overeating as it helps the stomach to stop feeling so hungry, as it slows down the pace at which the stomach empties. In addition, it lowers the hypoglycemic index. Lowering your hypoglycemic index will allow you to stay properly on track with your diet.
We all want clear skin, and often pay exorbitant amounts of money to achieve it. A pity then, when the best way to clearer skin is through a consistently clean and healthy diet, whilst drinking plenty of water, and ensuring you clean your skin on a regular basis. In addition, it’s possible to use raw Apple Cider Vinegar as an additive to your dietary intake to assist in positive results in clearer skin, this is because ACV has a natural ability to regulate the pH levels in your body and therefore your skin. The alpha hydroxy acids, that are prevalent within Apple Cider Vinegar, aid in dissolving the natural oil/sebum that is produced by the skin which ultimately clogs the pores creating spots. It also helps in encouraging skin renewal.
Adding genuine raw honey, such as Manuka, to your ACV and water mixture will not only improve its taste but also give a boost of energy. The honey adds additional antioxidants that not only help with your immune system, but also help to clear the skin.
For a natural energy drink, start your day with 1 to 2 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar in a glass of water (200ml) and a tablespoon of raw honey. This will do much more for your body and mind than any off the shelf energy drink, and will help you to avoid illnesses, whilst regulating sugar levels.
Apple Cider Vinegar with Raw Honey:
As mentioned, when digested, the alkaline properties of Apple Cider Vinegar can aid with the reduction of acidity within the body which in turn helps to fight infections. Adding Raw Honey to the mix not only makes the drink taste much nicer, but also increases the antioxidant capabilities of the mixture. Unprocessed (raw) honey has been classified as an alkaline-forming food substance.

There are plenty of good reasons to detox on a regular basis as it’s an effective way of removing all of the toxins that have built up within the body over any given period of time. In addition to the removal of toxicity build up, it also helps with the slowing of the ageing process. As with everything, there are ‘good’ and ‘bad’ ways to go about detoxing. Firstly, it’s important to note that starvation, or juice only diets, are not the answer to an efficient detox. We can live in a semi-permanent state of detox if our daily intake is closely monitored and we maintain a healthy regime of foods. Our bodies are natural detoxifying machines, almost all organs have cleansing properties such as the bowels, liver, skin and kidneys…even our eyes clean themselves. With that in mind, it’s important to be knowledgeable of the functions of each and utilising the processes effectively to create greater longevity from our bodies.
Like most people, when you allow the body to accumulate unhealthy toxins, you are more susceptible to illness than those who avoid these build ups or those who detox on a regular basis. A regular detox regime allows for a more healthy and managed lifestyle, which means you’ll be able to fight off infections/disease more easily. People who are regularly ill are usually so due to a build up of toxins, regular detox helps to reduce this frequency.
Apple Cider Vinegar detoxes are no good simply by themselves, they are aimed as an additive to a healthy diet and lifestyle to boost the maximum possible outputs of the body and its healing ability. If you are considering a full detox, it is recommended to speak with a reputable nutritionist who will tailor a program which will contain all of the vital vitamins and minerals for a successful and sustainable outcome. Making small adjustments to your daily regime can have significant benefits to your well-being. Remember: starvation is not healthy, and juice only diets are unhealthy also.
Exercise and Apple Cider Vinegar Detox:
Detox or no detox, exercise is one of the most important elements of a healthy lifestyle. Therefore, the inclusion of frequent exercise to your detox program is a must. While most excretions from a detox diet/program will come from urine, sweat also helps to remove toxins from the body that is close to the skin that would not necessarily be cleansed by the bowels, liver or kidneys. If you have access to one, using a sauna, Jacuzzi, steam room, or combination of the three, after exercise will also help to increase the amount of bodily sweat possible. As with any successful fitness program, rest is a critical element, so make sure to get enough rest each day and find ways to reduce as much stress as possible. As humans in today’s society, we are often bombarded with being constantly on and connected to different technology, it’s important to ensure you unplug and disconnect on a regular basis also.
What Does Apple Cider Vinegar Help With?:
- Weight – helps to balance the body, and the natural detox will assist with weight controlled diets
- Lymph Nodes – breaks up mucus in the body and allows for better lymph circulation
- Digestion Issues – such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), gas and bloating
- General Fatigue – when you don’t even want to get out of bed each day
- Odour – regulating the pH of the skin, acting as a natural deodorant
- Sleep – if you find it hard getting to sleep, even when you’re tired
- Skin – cleanses the pores and reduces redness and dry skin
- Focus – it will help you to feel better and be less distracted
How Do Detoxes Work?:
A detox can be defined as “a process or period of time in which one abstains from or rids the body of toxic or unhealthy substances”. Typically this comes from cleansing the bloodstream by removing harmful particles in the blood and in the liver, which is where unhealthy toxins are packaged for removal. Our bowels remove toxic elements through our intestines, as do our lungs, kidneys, skin and lymph nodes. If we don’t look after our vital organs, they begin to work inefficiently and as a result many impurities are incorrectly filtered, thus having a knock on effect across the body. The reason we feel and look great in our youth is typically down to the fact we had done little to no damage to it at that point.
Before Starting a Detox:
If you’re serious about starting a detox, then you’ll likely want to give you and your body its best shot at getting the best results from the process. The first thing you need to do is have a plan, in line with that you need to get rid of any bad habits that don’t fit in with that place, such as alcohol, cigarettes, soft drinks, coffee/caffeine (yes, even coffee), processed foods, and saturated fats. Processed foods, whilst looking fine from the outside, are full of toxins which you don’t want to be consuming, especially during a detox phase. As with all health related considerations, it’s advisable to visit your GP/Doctor in advance of going full steam ahead with any detox, regardless of the information you have read here or anywhere else, and regardless of the information given by your nutritionist. Get a complete check-up and ensure that your body isn’t going to reject anything you’re planning on consuming.
How Much Apple Cider Vinegar Should I Have A Day?
There are no set definitions around how much ACV is effective when consumed on a daily basis. Typically a dose ranging from a teaspoon to a tablespoon, taken with a glass of water up to three times a day, is where those within the fitness industry find the most benefit. It’s important to note that the acidity of Apple Cider Vinegar can erode the enamel of your teeth, it can also be irritable to your throat and can also interfere with blood-thinning medications, diuretics or insulin. As a result, going above typical doses is not recommended. Again, it’s important to speak with your GP/Doctor in advance of undertaking an ACV detox, especially if you’re taking other medications.
For weight loss, which is what many people use the Apple Cider Vinegar detox for, it helps to accelerate your metabolism and causes natural weight reduction. Some suggest that drinking a single tablespoon daily can generate 1lb loss of fat per week, although it’s likely this is in conjunction with regular exercise and a controlled diet.
Some people like to use ACV to help clearing the skin of spots and acne, softening the skin, and reducing red marks. Clean your face as usual, then pour a small amount of ACV onto a small plate. Using cotton balls and soft patting, apply some Apple Cider Vinegar to the affected areas. After 3 days of doing this your should start to see clearer skin.

Are There Side Effects Of Apple Cider Vinegar?
ACV is naturally acidic, so you need to keep it away from your eyes. It’s not advisable to drink it straight from the bottle without diluting it with water as it could cause discomfort to your oesophagus. As mentioned several times throughout, always speak with our GP/Doctor before making changes to your diet, if you truly want the best results. There are many benefits of using the Apple Cider Vinegar Detox, and they are inexpensive ways to help you feel and look better.
