While we may not realise it, self-esteem plays a pivotal role in whether we will be a success in life or not. Why is that? The way we view ourselves (self-esteem), which includes our talents and skills, have a direct affect on our thoughts. Those thoughts turn into actions. Actions create experience and then you have reference points of confidence.
Taking actions is extremely important as actions are what drive us closer to our goals. If you, like most people do, have great ambitions yet feel that you’re not getting closer to your dreams, then it’s likely down to not taking action or potentially taking the wrong steps to fulfill them. Most people do not realise that thoughts and actions are inextricably linked. In general, positive thoughts lead to positive actions, much the same in that negative thoughts often lead to inaction or negative actions.
All good things, except winning the Lottery, take time. Reaching your goals should be a lifelong endeavour of setting and achieving the milestones in between. One thing that can give you the drive to succeed is in having high self-esteem. High self-esteem helps give you the determination and power needed to take actions towards the achievements of your goals. Conversely, having low-self esteem is a big setback to your success. Why? Because when a person has low self-esteem it’s more difficult for them to perform the right actions to achieve their goals.
Simply put, self-esteem refers to how a person looks at themselves and what they see. To look at oneself in a positive manner is indicative of high self-esteem. Low self-esteem is reflective of having a negative view of oneself or in ones skills and abilities.
A very typical value of someone with low self-esteem is in being overly self-critical. Constructive criticism should always be welcomed from other people, however, the worst kind of criticism is the one that comes from within as it leads to self-doubt. While we should always strive for improvement and being critical of our actions, criticizing without any view to some positive can have lasting damage to your ego.
Negative thought is one of the biggest killer of dreams known to man. There is little that is more destructive. Never tell yourself “I can’t”, or “that’s impossible”. It’s much better to believe that anything is possible and that you can achieve anything!

How do you build self-esteem?
As thoughts are the roots of our feelings, and actions become them, you must always set out with positive thoughts that are beneficial to the process. Using reference experiences, focus on the things you have done well or succeeded at instead of focusing on failures and mistakes. Take ownership and pride in your achievements, no matter how small you believe them to be, and use them to propel you toward success. There is no vanity in this. It’s simple recognition in the things that you’ve done in the past and acknowledging your abilities.
Everyone has their own share of accomplishments in life. The best thing that you can do is to write down your accomplishments over the last month, year, 5 years and so on. Make sure to recall all of the challenges that you overcame for these are accomplishments. You’ll be surprised at how many achievements you have made. If you can’t think of any, then you’re being overly critical, meaning your self-esteem is low. Make sure to be open, true, and honest with yourself. In moments of doubt, you can refer back to this list and remember your accomplishments. Continue to add to the list as you achieve more in life, and be grateful for every step you take.
